As the owner and president of JM Communications, a professional development and training business for over 20 years, Joan Matochik has helped many employees sharpen their written and verbal communication skills so that they are more productive in the workplace.

Currently based in Dumfries, Virginia, and originally in Rochester, New York, Joan's training business has expanded over the years to meet the growing needs of her clients. She is flexible, adapting her training for widely diverse audiences from businesses, government agencies, not-for-profits, educational institutions, and other organizations.

Joan's expertise includes specific skill areas that range from business writing and English grammar to sharpening e-mail skills to customer service communication to giving and receiving workplace feedback. For several years, Joan served as an affiliated training instructor providing open enrollment and custom workshops at the Rochester (NY) Business Alliance, Finger Lakes Community College (Division of Professional Development and Continuing Studies), Monroe Community College (Office of Workforce Development), and the Professional Development Group. In addition, she has owned a public relations consulting business focused on publicity and promotion, media relations, event coordination, publications, and strategic planning. Joan has helped many clients improve their public image and communicate their targeted messages through the media.

Her higher education credentials include a B.A. degree in English Language and Literature from Daemen College in Buffalo, New York, and a M.A. degree in Journalism from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communication at Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York.

Joan has been an adjunct faculty member at Canisius College in Buffalo, New York; Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York; and the State University of New York College at Geneseo in Geneseo, New York.

She is a member of the American Society for Training and Development and the Association for Women in Communications. Her writing has received awards from the Rochester, New York chapter of the Society for Technical Communication. A published author, her most recent articles have appeared in Business Strategies Magazine (Rochester, New York); HR News, published by the Rochester Business Alliance (Rochester, New York); and on The Ad Hub, a Web directory of Upstate New York advertising agencies and marketing resources.
